How Long Do Spray Tans Last? (And 7 Tips to Make Yours Last Even Longer)

One of the most common questions we get at Seven Sunless is: "How long will my spray tan last?" The short answer? Typically, a spray tan lasts 7–10 days with proper care. But the longer answer depends on your skin type, how well you prep, and how you care for your tan afterward.
In this post, we’re breaking down the lifecycle of a spray tan and giving you pro tips to stretch that glow as long as possible.
How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?
A typical spray tan lasts about a week. But depending on your skin's natural exfoliation rate and your post-tan routine, you may see it fade sooner or stick around a little longer.
Most clients see their tan begin to gradually fade between days 5–7. By days 8–10, it will be mostly worn off.
7 Tips to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer
1. Exfoliate Properly Before Your Tan
Smooth, clean skin = better tan adherence. Make sure to exfoliate 2–3 days before your appointment with an exfoliating mitt. *Pro tip: focus on areas that your skin tends to be more dry like hands, elbows and feet! A lot of clients often miss their underarms and armpit area so make sure to get every single crevice!
2. Moisturize Daily (After First Rinse)
Hydrated skin holds onto color longer. Use a tan-safe lotion every day after your first rinse! If you have dry skin, you might need to moisturize twice a day to help your tan last longer.
3. Avoid Long, Hot Showers
Stick to quick, lukewarm showers to avoid drying out your skin and speeding up exfoliation.
4. Use Gentle, Sulfate-Free Products
Harsh soaps and body washes will strip your tan. Look for sulfate-free, hydrating cleansers. *Pro tip: only use soap where you need to!
5. Pat Dry, Don’t Rub
Always gently pat your skin with a towel after showering instead of rubbing.
6. Skip the Sauna and Sweaty Workouts (at least early on)
For the first 24–48 hours, avoid sweat, steam, and friction that can lift the color unevenly.
7. Avoid Retinol, AHAs/BHAs, and Acne Treatments
Ingredients like these increase cell turnover and can fade your tan faster.
